Victims’ Rights March 4/10 in Santa Cruz 04-04-19 16:40 DC

Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s office announced today that the Eighth Annual Victims’ Rights March of Solidarity is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10th from 6:00–8:00 pm.

This year’s theme, “Honoring Our Past. Creating Hope for the Future” is to raise awareness about crime victims’ issues and rights. The D-A encourages the public to join and stand together with victims of crime and their families.

Participants will gather at 6 pm at the courthouse steps located at 701 Ocean Street and proceed through downtown to City Hall at 809 Center Street.

District Attorney Jeffrey Rosell will address this year’s theme and the Ceremony of Names will be conducted to honor and remember homicide victims from our community.

Their photographs will be distributed to family and friends to carry during the march. Crime survivor, Joell M., will share her story about life after the loss of her son. Lora Lee M. will share her insights on her recent participation in the Survivor Engagement Project here in Santa Cruz County.

The event is part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which is April 7 – 13, 2019. Since 1981, this week has provided an opportunity for the nation to recognize the toll of victimization on communities.

According to the most recent Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey, U.S. residents age 12 or older experienced 3.1 million violent victimizations and U.S. households experienced an estimated 13.3 million property crimes in 2017.
