Today: CALTRANS To Close 40-Mile Stretch of Highway 1 near Big Sur at 5PM

Fearing large overnight rainfall, CALTRANS says it will close a more than 40-mile stretch of Highway 1 in the Big Sur area today at 5 PM. The area affected will be near Mud Creek (PM 8.9) and Paul’s Slide (PM 21.6) on State Route 1 in the Big Sur area. There have been slides and closures in both area due to previous storms.

CALTRANS says a final notice of the closure will be sent later today, just prior to the roadway closing. The closure is expected to last at least overnight and could continue into the weekend, depending on rainfall and forecast conditions.

The gates on either side of Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide will be key locked. These gates will not be manned when the highway is closed. No one, including Emergency Services or Caltrans employees, will be allowed access until a proper assessment can be made and any necessary cleanup has been completed.
