A Santa Cruz County judge sentenced a man convicted of shooting and killing a great white shark in 2018. The shark washed up in Rio Del Mar on June 17, 2018 with multiple gunshot wounds from a .22 caliber firearm. A California Department of Fish and Wildlife investigation identified , 41-year-old Vinh Pham of San Jose as responsible for the sharks death. Pham was sentenced to 2 years of probation, a fine of 5 thousand dollars, and the rifle was seized and destroyed.
