Two King Tides Occur This Weekend, How To Help Science 12-21-18 15:00 DC

The California Coastal Commission is seeking your help in documenting – with smartphone photographs – this weekend’s King Tides.

The term King Tide is used to describe an especially high tide event, when there is an alignment of the gravitational pull between the sun and the moon. There are two King Tides this weekend, during the 9 AM hour on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Coastal Commission is asking people to take photographs to document the impact of these very high tides on anything they touch.

The King Tides will occur in Santa Cruz at 9:02 AM Saturday and 9:46 AM Sunday. Both tides will be slightly less than 6-1/2 feet. The King Tides occur in Monterey at 9:08 AM Saturday and 9:52 AM Sunday.

Because the tide will be much higher than usual, please use caution if you go out to see them.
