The Santa Cruz animal shelter is looking for homes for about 80 well-socialized pet rats seized from an Aptos home earlier this week. Rats make good pets, but they also breed quickly if not separated. That’s what happened to the rats’ owner, who became overwhelmed by the animals. The shelter says it has already spent $1,000 housing the rodents and is looking for donations and new owners to adopt them beginning Saturday. Adopting rats will be two-for-$25.00.
