Conservationists are touting the success of a program that keeps nearly 300 wild condors safe from powerlines.
Kelly Sorenson of the Ventana Wilderness Society says large birds, including condors, are especially threatened when the land or collide with powerlines.
PG&E has installed special power poles which deliver a small and safe shock when a condor lands on it. Sorenson says that condors have long memories and the shock is enough, with occasional refreshers, to keep the condors mostly safe from the deadly powerlines.
One of the birds protected by the program is Pasquale, an about-to-fledge condor chick. You can see a nest cam of Pasquale at www.ventanaws.org
