Crews are being successful in cleaning up the toxic algal bloom in Watsonville’s Pinto Lake. The work began in 2015, when scientists noticed high concentrations of Microcystin, a toxin caused by Blue-Green Algae that flourishes in pinto lake because of agricultural and residential run-off. Microcystin is dangerous for both humans and animals ….and has been linked to several otter deaths in the pajaro river.
The problem has also been noted in Australia, Brazil, China and the Gulf Of Mexico.
