An independent investigator will be examining the theft of Gilroy police chief’s gun and badge. The investigation will focus on policy violation concerning storing firearms by peace officers. Chief Scot Smithee told Modesto police that he improperly stored the badge and gun in his vehicle, on April 27th, while attending a graduation ceremony at Modesto Junior College. During the event Chief Smitee’s Ford truck was stolen along with the gun and badge. The truck was recovered three days later and 36 year old Louis Grubeck Junior was arrested for auto theft. The gun and badge are still missing.
