The man accused of setting his family’s dog on fire is due to appear in a Monterey county courtroom this afternoon. Devonte Marquis Sirwet had been kicked out of his mother’s house several months before he dog-napped “Kato” and took him to a nearby canal before dousing him with a flammable liquid and lighting the dog on fire. Kato, who suffered burns to more than 90 percent of his body, was euthanized due to the severity of his injuries. Kirwet faces charges of animal theft, animal cruelty, arson, and possession of controlled substances.
