A car sheared off a fire hydrant before coming to rest on a utility pole in Santa Cruz early Saturday. Shortly before 7 a.m. emergency crews responded to the 300 block of Soquel Avenue. Public works crews shut down the water while rescue personnel freed the driver and remove the vehicle from the pole. Power was interrupted to area buildings until Saturday evening.
