World Wetlands Day is coming up next weekend and Wetlands Watch and the City Of Watsonville are looking for volunteers to help them with a special project. Volunteers are expected to plant nearly 3-thousand native plants around the Upper Struve Slough Trail. People are asked to gather at the Upper Struve Slough Trail behind Nob Hill Shopping Center in Watsonville at 10 a.m. Saturday. Organizers plan to be done with the planting by noon that day. The Watsonville Wetlands cover 800 acres, making them the 3rd-largest freshwater wetlands on the California coast. More than 250 birds (including migratory waterfowl, as well as eagles and ospreys) use he wetlands for food and habitat. There are 23 endangered, threatened or special concern species currently living in the wetlands.
