Local first responders are the first in the country to be trained to offer a potentially life saving antidote. A dozen Santa Cruz police officers will be equipped with a nasal spray that contains a generic form of Narcan. It can be used on victims of drug overdoses to help them survive until they can be appropriately treated.
58 people died from drug overdoses in Santa Cruz county last year. Although the antidote can temporarily help, those victims will still need to get to a hospital.
