(18:40) SANTA CRUZ – A fatal car crash occurred along Highway 1 on Monday afternoon when a southbound Lexus SUV drifted across the divider and collided with an oncoming Mazda. The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead. Seven people were in the Lexus and five, including the driver, are students at UCSC. During the investigation, CHP found cannabis concealed in the SUV. All but one of the passengers admitted to smoking the marijuana. The driver took prescription medication earlier that day. Two passengers were flown to Valley Medical in San Jose. The driver is being treated for a lacerated liver, CHP said. The investigation is ongoing.
