(19:05) SANTA CRUZ- A fire destroyed a public portable toilet in downtown Santa Cruz early Thursday morning. Shortly before 3:30 a.m. firefighters arrived at the corner of Laurel and Front Streets and extinguished the fire. No one was seen in the vicinity of the fire, the cause of which is under investigation. The public facility was placed at the site in response to complaints of lack of a 24 hour bathroom for the homeless population encamped upon the San Lorenzo River levee.
