(15:20)SANTA CRUZ- A sailboat was damaged off the coast of Santa Cruz by a breaching whale on Saturday. The incident took place during a Santa Cruz Yacht Club completion when at about 2:30 p.m. a whale breached next to a 24 foot vessel off of West Cliff Drive. Crew members say that when the whale became aware of the boat it attempted unsuccessfully to avoid the vessel, striking the sails with its tail breaking the mast. Two crew member were knocked overboard and pulled to safety, one sustained minor cuts. There was also evidence the whale may have been injured during the incident.
