June 15, 2015: San Lorenzo River Bacteria Report

(11:00) SANTA CRUZ – A new report shows the high levels of fecal bacteria in the San Lorenzo River is coming from birds. Last year the San Lorenzo River Alliance Water Quality Working Group collected samples along the river. 36 samples from different sites along the river and Carbonera creek were gathered. The samples showed almost no traces of human fecal matter, and showed that most came from birds. The executive director of the Coastal Watershed Council said that the report suggests that the river is cleaner than people may believe from it’s reputation.   The organization plans to test again during a year when there is not a drought.
