June 15, 2015: Two Injured in Great America Roller-Coaster Accident

(09:02) SANTA CLARA – Two people were injured in a roller-coaster accident at Great America in Santa Clara on Friday night. Officials say the incident occurred when a park employee dropped his cellphone while standing by the ride Flight Deck. He then collided with a passenger on the roller-coaster while attempting to retrieve the phone. The employee sustained severe head injuries and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.  The passenger sustained leg injuries and the collision nearly severed his pinky. He was rushed into surgery and released the following day. The ride was closed Saturday and will reopen once safety officers complete their investigation. (S.G.)
