(10:15) SANTA CRUZ – The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is planning to increase patrols along the coastline to combat drug smuggling operations. Officials say there has been an increase in boats smuggling drugs to California from Mexico. The Sheriff’s Office has applied for a federal grant in order to monitor the 22 miles of coastline, from Santa Cruz to the San Mateo County Line. The funds would be used to purchase two new patrol vehicles and an airplane. Last month, the Board of Supervisors approved the agency’s proposal to apply for the grant from the Department of Homeland Security. (M.K.)
