A new local marketing campaign is being kicked-off this month for the start of the peak season for the official state vegetable. Heirloom artichokes, in fact any heirloom fruit or vegetable, is “any distinct variety that grows, and has been in trade for, more than 50 years using the same lineage….and Castroville-based Ocean Mist grows their heirloom artichokes from rootstock that dates back to 1924. The peak volume of the Ocean Mist variety is expected next month, and should culminate with the Castroville Artichoke Festival (at the Monterey County Fairgrounds) May 30th and 31st.
