The man, who died after falling into the ocean off 3 Mile Beach north of Santa Cruz, has been identified as a 53-year-old Modesto resident. He was reportedly with three other men when he was washed into the water, while collecting mussels. Although state lifeguards tried to save him, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
