Salinas animal shelters have adopted a new tactic to deal with feral cat populations. Monterey County Animal Services and the Salinas Animal Shelter have been using funds from a $10,000 grant from the ASPCA to start a program of catch and release, in which, the unadoptable cats are trapped, then spayed or neutered, and returned to the capture site. Before the implementation of the program, 98 percent of the over 700 feral cats brought to the shelter annually, had to be euthanized.
