The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office is warning business owners of a new scam. Fictitious Business Name Renewal Center, a private Sacramento company (whose true name is Compliance Filings, Incorporated) is charging Santa Cruz County businesses far more than the County Clerk’s Office charges to renew business names. The company got the business information through public records and are mailing letters that appear to be from the government. The clerk’s office charges $40 plus $7 for each additional business name and owner.
