MONTEREY COUNTY MAY RECONSIDER A PLAN REGARDING A COUNTYWIDE BAN ON PLASTIC BAGS. OFFICIALS ARE CHANGING THEIR APPROACH TO THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE AFTER A STATEWIDE BAN HAS BEEN EXPECTED TO PASS. THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAS BEEN LEFT WITH THE DECISION OF EITHER WAITING FOR THE STATE TO ENACT THE BAN OR ADOPTING COUNTYWIDE LAWS. FAILING TO PASS A LOCAL ORDINANCE BY THE DEADLINE COULD COST THE COUNTY AN ESTIMATED 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS, WHEREAS WAITING FOR THE STATE WOULD COST NOTHING. A PLASTIC BAG BAN HAS BEEN ON THE TABLE FOR YEARS, HOWEVER THE COUNTY HAS YET TO COME TO A CONSENSUS ON THE ISSUE.
