IT’S LOOKING AS THOUGH AN ICONIC BIG WAVE SURF CONTEST MAY TAKE PLACE THIS FRIDAY. IT IS SAID THE WAVES ARE BEGINNING TO LOOK BIG ENOUGH (AND CLEAN ENOUGH) FOR THE BODY GLOVE MAVERICKS INVITATIONAL NEAR HALF MOON BAY. THE YELLOW ALERT HAS BEEN ISSUED, WHICH MEANS THE 24 TOP BIG-WAVE SURFER’S ARE ON STAND-BY. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO FLY IN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO SURF THE GIANT WAVES OFF OF PILLAR POINT HARBOR….AND COMPETE FOR A 50 THOUSAND DOLLAR PRIZE.
Heat 1 of the Mavericks Invitational includes three Santa Cruz surfers — Ken “Skindog” Collins, Anthony Tashnick, and Ryan Augenstein.
The competition’s defending champion, La Selva Beach native Peter Mel, will be surfing in Heat 2 against Tyler Fox, Colin Dwyer, Grant Washburn, Dave Wassel, and Ryan Seelbach.
