Salinas Police are planning to step up enforcement efforts in the wake of the city’s 7th pedestrian fatality this week. Officers are being encouraged to issue more jaywalking tickets, and fine drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians. Officials say a lack of patrol officers could be a contributing factor to the increase in pedestrian fatalities, but also say that drivers and pedestrians need to be more careful. They urge pedestrians, even if they have the right of way, to look both ways and to make eye contact with the driver. They also ask people to press the button at the crosswalk and wait until it’s safe to walk.
