MONTEREY COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES DISCOVERED A BAGGIE OF HUMAN ASHES AFTER ARRESTING A SEASIDE MAN FRIDAY NIGHT. DEPUTIES SAY 42-YEAR OLD PAUL NIETO WAS STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF PRUNEDALE ROAD AROUND 9 P.M., TALKING ON HIS CELL PHONE WHEN HE IGNORED ORDERS TO STEP OUT OF THE ROAD. A BRIEF FOOT CHASE ENSUED WHILE DEPUTIES THREATENED HIM AT GUNPOINT. NIETO WAS EVENTUALLY CAUGHT, HANDCUFFED AND ARRESTED, MEANWHILE A SEARCH OF HIS TRUCK REVEALED METHAMPHETMINE, DRUG PARAPHERNALIA, A COMPUTER AND THE BAGGIE OF HUMAN ASHES. THE ASHES WERE RELEASED TO A WOMAN WHO IDENTIFIED THEM AS HER LATE BROTHER’S REMAINS.
