SALINAS’ CHINATOWN DISTRICT HAS BEEN THE CENTER OF THE CITY’S HOMELESS POPULATION. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR PORTA-POTIES WERE BROUGHT TO THE AREA TO SOLVE SANITATION ISSUES, AND IMPROVEMENTS WERE NOTED. NOW, AFTER SOME OF THE HOMELESS POPULATION HAS MIGRATED TO THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESS AREA, SOLUTIONS FOR THE SANITATION ISSUES ARE BEING EXAMINED FOR THAT AREA AS WELL. THE CITY IS EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITY OF PURCHASING UNUSED BUILDINGS AND EQUIPPING THEM WITH BATHROOMS AND SHOWERS AS A WAY TO KEEP STORE FRONT AREAS CLEAN.
