thousands of volunteers turned out this weekend to help clean central coast beaches, during save our shores’ annual “coastal cleanup day.” nearly 35-hundred volunteers participated in the event, which targeted 70 beaches in monterey and santa cruz counties. in all, volunteers collected 16-thousand-8-hundred-27 pounds of trash and recyclables. the worst spot in either county was elkhorn slough, where volunteers removed more than 2-thousand pounds of trash.
