Residents of Live Oak gathered on Seventh Avenue yesterday afternoon to protest the planned establishment of a Day Laborer Center in their neighborhood. The center would give hundreds of day laborers a place to connect with prospective employers, instead of waiting outside of home improvement stores, as is the practice now. The Community Action Board has had the plan in the works for 5 years now, but residents of the Seventh Avenue neighborhood are concerned that the center will only cause problems. The issues most often cited are a lack of parking in the neighborhood, and possible increased danger to children, as the Day Laborer Center would be located within walking distance of 4 schools.
