The Santa Cruz Police and Public Works Department have made requests for a speed limit increase, and the Santa Cruz City Council seems likely to approve the application. The City Council showed favor for the proposal which would increase the speed limits on 11 city streets from 25mph to 30mph. The motivation for the speed gain is to bring the limits up to the average safe speed, so that authorities can use radar to stop speeding vehicles in those areas. Currently, they are unable to do so, because tickets given in those zones are unlikely to stand up in court. The increase will also serve to improve slow traffic on the selected streets.
