A group of community activists kicked off a campaign this weekend, to put the final approval of a desalination plant in the hands of santa cruz voters. The “Right to vote on desalination” initiative would amend santa cruz’s city charter to require a vote by city residents, before a desal plant could be built. The effort is being spearheaded by the group “Santa Cruz Desal Alternatives.” Organizers need about 55-hundred signatures from registered voters, in order to qualify the measure for the ballot. Meanwhile, a draft environmental impact report on the proposed desal plant is expected to be presented in april.
