Preliminary test results announced today by the u.s. coast guard, reveal that there is no oil entombed in the wreckage of a sunken taker. The s.s. Montebello is a 9-hundred foot tanker, which lies under water off the California coast (near cambria), just south of the designated monterey bay marine sanctuary. The expedition to analyze if there was any oil left in the wreckage, was carried out by researchers from the national oceanic atmospheric and administration and the u.s. coast guard. The s.s. Montebello was hit by a torpedo on December 23rd, 1941, about 6 miles off the coast. The tanker was carrying more than 3-million gallons of crude oil, destined for Vancouver. All crew members aboard survived.
