the santa cruz county district attorney’s office is warning residents to beware of fraudulent and HARASSING calls from debt collectors. a santa cruz resident was contacted by someone who claimed to be from state of florida check INVESTIGATIVE services. the man was threatened with prison time if he did not pay a 900 dollar debt within 3 hours. the call originated from a debt collector who was not affiliated with any government agency. the district attorney’s office would like to remind everyone that debt collectors are required to identify themselves, and it is illegal to threaten consumers with arrest or lawsuits.
