A protest is expected to take place in Salinas this morning after local growers are slated to meet with one of the makers of a controversial crop fumigant. A coalition including teachers, farm workers and environmentalists are set to meet at 9:30 a.m. on West Laurel Drive to protest the use of methyl iodide. Opponents say the fumigant, which is planned for use in the cultivation of strawberries, is a carcinogen and could unleash harmful, even deadly effects, into the soil and water.
