a STRETCH of highway 1 about 12 miles south of carmel is closed indefinitely after a portion of the roadway crumbled into the pacific ocean. about 40 feet of the two-lane highway washed out after 5 p.m. on wednesday. the affected area is just south of the rocky creek bridge. drivers who wish to get to big sur from the north can take highway 101 to south of king city, and nacimiento-fergusson road to the coast. it is unknown when the highway will reopen.
