Mee Memorial Healthcare System said a downturn in patient visits and resulting decreased revenue has forced cutbacks at the King City hospital.
The cutbacks include:
- Layoff of 55 staff members
- A hiring freeze for positions not necessary for COVID-19 response or viability of the healthcare system
- Salary reductions
- Suspension of annual merit increases
- Temporary suspension of some specialty services, including labor and delivery and cardiology.
Mee is South Monterey County’s only hospital. The closest alternative is 40 miles always in Salinas.
