Is there such a thing as a ‘just war’?

This Saturday August 2nd 8-9 PM on It’s A Question Of Balance with Ruth Copland we consider – What constitutes a ‘just war’? The Indian epic, the Mahabharata, offers one of the first written discussions of a ‘just war’. Five ruling brothers discuss if the suffering caused by war can ever be justified. They consider proportionality (chariots cannot attack cavalry, only other chariots; no attacking people in distress); just means (no poisoned or barbed arrows); just cause (no attacking out of rage); and fair treatment of captives and the wounded. They also hope last minute efforts to reconcile differences could avoid war. Thousands of years later these considerations still apply. Is there such a thing as a just war and if so, what are the criteria? What do you think? Join us on Saturday!
