THE 9TH ANNUAL MONTEREY BAY BIRDING FESTIVAL KICKS OFF THIS WEEK.   ROUGHLY 300 BIRD WATCHERS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE EVENT THIS YEAR.  THE FESTIVAL WILL FEATURE SPEAKERS, WORKSHOPS, LECTURES, FIELD TRIPS, FAMILY ACTIVITIES ALONG WITH A VENDOR’S FAIR.   THE EVENT INCLUDES A VARIETY OF FIELD TRIPS PLANNED FOR THE BAY, BIG SUR, AND THE PINNACLES.  ORGANIZERS SAY THE CENTRAL COAST IS IDEAL FOR VIEWING MIGRATING BIRDS, WHO ARE HEADING SOUTH TO MEXICO AND BEYOND FOR THE WINTER. LAST YEAR OVER 300 SPECIES WERE SPOTTED AT THE EVENT, INCLUDING RAPTORS, PELAGIC OR OCEAN GOING BIRDS ALONG WITH SHOREBIRDS, WADERS AND SONGBIRDS.  THE FESTIVAL STARTS THURSDAY AND RUNS THROUGH SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH.
