Officials at the Monterey Bay Aquarium announced yesterday the death of the 2nd African blackfooted penguin chick. The chick, which had hatched January 11th in the penguin exhibit in the aquarium’s “Splash Zone: Ocean Homes” family gallery, was found dead in it’s nest. Officials report no visible signs of trauma. An avian pathologist is expected to perform tests to determine the cause of death. Meanwhile, the 1st penguin chick, is now 10 days old, continues to gain weight and as of Monday, weighed approximately 15 ounces, nearly double it’s last weight of about 8 ounces on Friday.
